I found cycling in 2022. I work in law enforcement and have co-workers who were cyclists, and I saw how challenging and fun the sport could be. Cycling was my happy place, my therapy, and something just for me. My first WCC was with a group of coworkers in 2022. We had such an amazing time, the food, the drinks, the music. I planned to make it an annual tradition.
On February 28, 2023, I suffered a traumatic brain injury. My world changed in an instant. I had difficulty walking, speaking, and doing the things I loved. It was one of the hardest times of my life, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to get on a bike again. Cycling and the WCC 2023 ride were my motivation to push myself and get back on a bike.
On May 6, 2023, I completed the 100km route. I wasn’t sure I would be able to feel that kind of happiness again. That day was more than another ride; it was proving to myself that I could do it and still be the person I was before the accident. My friend, the person who was with me when I bought my first bike, was there to cross the finish line that day. He came from San Diego to support me and let me draft a bit…
This ride is now an annual tradition, and it brings me to tears with gratitude. Last year, the rain was a true testament to grit and perseverance. The rain and cold make the beer taste even better!
See you on May 2, 2026!
